I have always had a knack for mushrooms, especially as an individual. I love eating them, especially when mixed with groundnut paste accompanying mashed plantain (matooke) cooked in banana leaves. My grandma would just pick them from decaying logs and prepare. That’s for me.

Anyway, the first time I discovered that mushrooms are real money makers other than being a personal delicacy was during my stint with a business advisory firm six or seven years ago. An analysis of the opportunity was done with a gentleman named Abel Kiddu being the case study. It stopped at that.

However, I later…

Uganda has a dual economy. Meaning it has both government and private participation in decision making, resource allocation, production, etc.

It’s mostly seen as a liberal economy. Ugandan businesses operate in a free market environment, meaning (and most evidently) that some one can start a business and charge a price he or she wants, apart from a few sectors that have some government regulation like utilities — notably power, water, insurance, air transport etc. where it does that through authorities or agencies.

The advantage with a free market is that you charge what you want. The buyers also benefit by…

In this article, I will to tell you a little about a tax compliance (or non-compliance) case of an ordinary business in Uganda, the problems or challenges such businesses face and what they do to try and ‘dodge’ taxes. I will also provide you with a few tips on how to pay less tax to avoid huge penalties without necessarily evading the tax man.

In 2015, a relative of mine owned a photography business (which is still in operation). …

About three weeks ago, a gentleman on my LinkedIn network asked me what it would require one to start sand mining and the financing opportunities available, after visiting my LinkedIn profile and seeing my professional background and what I currently do.

I guess he also came across some of my articles on business, investment and finance and ideas or perspectives on startup funding. I smiled because; (i) I saw an opportunity for content generation, and (i) I saw an opportunity for business. So I decided to focus on the former, first.

You see on these streets, consulting gives you the…

Having a business idea is one thing. Executing it is another. Most times, you’re also advised to write down your idea before it vanishes, otherwise it will disappear like a spark of a light bulb. It’s also said that you need a plan on how you’re going to execute that idea.

A plan guides you and lets you identify the things you will need before you start executing the idea. It’s like a road map, a map for an unknown adventure. Ladies and gentlemen, am talking about a business plan. …

Last time I left having highlighted to you some of the investment opportunities that are lucrative in economic down turns or crises. I mentioned; capital and money markets, produce trading, transport & logistics, urban vegetable farming and investing in yourself.

But in the past few weeks, I have been getting some messages in my inbox and WhatsApp, mostly about capital markets — investing in stocks or buying shares. Many were asking: how can I invest in stocks/shares, where can I buy them from, are they profitable, how much are the shares, what are the most profitable companies, etc.

This indicated…

The title of this article is borrowed from “Real Artists Don’t Starve”, a Facebook community — where am also a member. Participants are all artistic, fictitious, real life writers of all age groups.

There’s a reason why I chose that title; and it’s a real life scenario. Ever wondered how marketing a newly written real life book feels like? Well, you will be shocked. Never mind that it was written by a Ugandan chap, holed somewhere in the UK.

It’s not easy marketing a printed book the traditional way, very daunting; and I mean real hassle. I…

So you really want to hear my story of success? Well, you will be amazed. I learnt digital marketing in a period of just three months, through online and offline tutorials….simple as that.

And guess what, I was getting the tutorials on YouTube — I never envisioned it (YouTube) being a very educative resource other than watching movies and sports clips on it. It’s a powerful education tool for the self-starters and those into self-study.

I was doing this after work hours (online) and from home (offline). I could save the tutorials on my portable device or…

WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems (CMS) worldwide. A content management system is an online system built for web site developers, software developers, programmers, content creators/writers, graphic designers and almost everybody in any field to showcase his/her works, or as a must-have tool for his/her job.

Close to or more than 30% of the web is powered by WordPress; I cannot forget to say including the White House. Most users of this CMS apply it in website building/development, blogging, etc. Some people (who use others like Drupal, Joomla, etc.) actually think WordPress is for blogging alone…
